Safe Playback: PPSM to PDF
The secure way to view Macro-Enabled PowerPoint Slide Shows (.ppsm) by treating them as static, code-free documents.

Guide Overview
What is a PPSM File?
The .ppsm format stands for "PowerPoint Open XML Macro-Enabled Slide Show." It is a specialized format designed to do two things simultaneously:
Auto-Play
Like .ppsx, it launches immediately into full-screen presentation mode, hiding the editor interface.
Execute Code
Unlike .ppsx, it is allowed to contain VBA macros (Visual Basic for Applications) that can run animations, quizzes, or backend logic.
The Danger Zone
PPSM files are uniquely risky. Because they are designed to "auto-run" the visual show, malicious actors can also script them to "auto-run" code (Auto_Open macros) the moment the file launches.
Email Filtering
Most IT departments block .ppsm files at the email gateway because they are indistinguishable from trojan horses until inspected.
Safe Viewing
The only way to 100% guarantee safety is to inspect the file without executing it. That is exactly what our PDF converter does.
Why Convert to PDF?
Total Sanitization
When we convert PPSM to PDF, we treat it as a data mining operation. We open the package, extract text, images, and vectors, and re-assemble them on a PDF canvas. The `vbaProject.bin` file is completely ignored. The resulting PDF is biologically incapable of carrying a macro virus.
Inspect Before Hosting
If you run a website that hosts user presentations, converting uploaded .ppsm files to PDF allows you to display the content to your users without putting them at risk of downloading an executable presentation.
Sanitization Workflow
- 1
Secure Upload
The file is uploaded to a sandboxed environment.
- 2
Open XML Parsing
Our engine reads the XML structure. It explicitly skips the macro binary parts.
- 3
Visual Rendering
We capture the appearance of the slides and bake them into a PDF.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my interactive quiz work?
No. Interactive elements in PPSM usually rely on VBA (e.g., clicking a button to check an answer). Since PDF is static and macros are removed, the quiz will just look like a static image.
Does this work on mobile?
Yes! This is one of the best use cases. Mobiles often cannot run .ppsm files at all. A PDF works perfectly on iOS and Android.
